This is the part that trips people up, and it matters most during a storm. Those four are separate municipalities inside Duval County with their own police departments and, at two of the beaches, their own electric utility.

The JaxReady app

Built by the city’s Emergency Preparedness and Information Technologies divisions, the JaxReady app uses GPS to locate your evacuation zone, shows real-time threat levels and weather reports, links to special needs registration, and carries weather, wildfire and drought maps. It is also where the city announces which shelters have opened.

Know your evacuation zone

Duval County uses zones A through F. Zone A covers the most vulnerable areas and evacuates first. Zone F is different from the others — it accounts for areas likely to flood from rainfall rather than storm surge.

NOAA Weather Radio

When the power is out and the cell network is congested at three in the morning, a NOAA Weather Radio still works. For Duval County, set SAME code 012031 and tune to 162.550 MHz, the Jacksonville transmitter (KHB-39). Enter the code as six digits.

Evacuation routes

Per the city’s official routes page: beaches residents travel westward on J. Turner Butler Boulevard, Beach Boulevard or Atlantic Boulevard, then west through downtown to I-10 West. Visitors and non-residents are routed from the southern entry to the county on I-95 North to I-295 North and back to I-95 North to exit.

Duval County Shelters

The city does not publish a fixed list of shelters that will open. Emergency Management decides which ones open for each storm and announces it through media, social media and the JaxReady app.

Pet-friendly shelters accept dogs, cats, rodents such as hamsters and gerbils, birds and rabbits. No reptiles are allowed. Pets need proof of vaccination and registration, must be properly crated or caged, and stay the owner’s responsibility. Service animals are allowed at any shelter in Duval County. Call 630-CITY for details.

Special medical needs sheltering requires pre-registration, and you must re-register every year. It covers people medically dependent on electricity or oxygen, and people with physical, medical, cognitive or sensory disabilities. Register at snr.flhealthresponse.com or call 904-255-3172. Transportation is provided for those who pre-register, and a caregiver or family member must come along.

No smoking, firearms, weapons or alcohol is permitted in any shelter.

Trash, Recycling, Yard Waste and Storm Debris

Trash and debris generate more calls than any other item in this list of Duval County emergency numbers and city services. All of it runs through 630-CITY at 904-630-2489 or myjax.custhelp.com. Solid Waste operations: 904-255-7500.

Recycling	Every other week	Yellow-lid cart, lid fully closed. Plastics #1–3, #5 and #7. No #4 and no #6. No aerosols, shredded paper, batteries, food or yard waste.
Yard waste	Weekly	Limbs under 5 feet, 40 pounds and 6 inches in diameter. Bags sealed. Maximum 5 cubic yards. No treated or painted wood, fencing or landscape timbers.
Bulk items	On your bulk day	Furniture, mattresses, grills, rolled carpet. Each piece under 5 feet. Tires and appliances must be scheduled — call 630-CITY.

Household hazardous waste goes to 2675 Commonwealth Avenue, 904-387-8847, Tuesday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They take paint, motor oil, gasoline, propane tanks, pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and electronics. Limits apply: 27 gallons of paint and 27 gallons of motor oil per 30 days, and three televisions or monitors per customer.

Collection schedules change on only two days a year — Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Those customers are serviced the following Saturday. Every other holiday runs normally.

After a hurricane: the four-pile rule

This is the single most useful thing on this page after a storm, because getting it wrong means your debris sits at the curb for weeks. The city is explicit: “Failure to keep debris separated by type may prevent workers from collecting it.”

Keep piles at least three feet from utility boxes, poles, mailboxes and fire hydrants, and never under trees. Get debris curbside as soon as it is safe to do so. Water and Sewer

JEA provides water and sewer for most of Duval County: 904-665-6000, 24 hours a day for outages and emergencies. Account questions are handled Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Before any digging project, call 811 or 800-432-4770.

Potholes, Drainage and City Service Requests

Jacksonville’s Right of Way and Stormwater Maintenance Division handles streets, sidewalks, drainage facilities and local bridges. Report a pothole, a drainage problem, a damaged sidewalk or a downed street sign the same way you report anything else in this city: call 630-CITY (904-630-2489) or file it at myjax.custhelp.com, which is open 24 hours.

Inside Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach and Baldwin, city-maintained streets are handled by those cities.

Animals, Pets and Wildlife

Two of the most-used Duval County emergency numbers involve animals, and domestic animals and wildlife go to different agencies. Animal Care and Protective Services (2020 Forest St.) handles stray, aggressive and dangerous animals, bites, cruelty and neglect. Call 630-CITY or report it at myjax.custhelp.com. After hours, call the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 904-630-0500. Shelter hours are noon to 7 p.m.

Lost or found a pet? The stray hold period is six days — check in person and check often. Upload a photo to Petco Love Lost and search the ACPS animal listing through jacksonville.gov/pets.

Wildlife is a different agency. Nuisance alligators (generally four feet or longer and believed to threaten people, pets or property): 866-392-4286. Injured manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, panthers and bears, or wildlife violations: FWC Wildlife Alert at 888-404-3922, 24 hours a day. And leave baby animals alone — the parents are almost always nearby.

Beaches and Ocean Safety

Any ocean emergency — a swimmer in trouble, a rip current, a missing person — is a 911 call. Do not call a beach office. Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue is at 904-270-1685, and Jacksonville Beach offers beach notifications by text: text DUVALBEACH to 888777. Heed all posted signs and warning flags.

Property, Taxes and New Homeowner Resources

Just bought a home in Duval County? Don’t forget Homestead Exemption

This is the most commonly missed step for new Florida homeowners, and it is the one with real money attached.

If the home is your permanent primary residence, Florida law may allow a homestead exemption that reduces taxable value and caps how fast your assessed value can rise in future years. If you had a Florida homestead in any of the three tax roll years before the year you are filing, portability may let you carry accumulated savings to the new home.

1. The filing deadline is March 1. Late filing is permitted into early September under Florida law, but do not plan around it.
2. Nobody files it for you. Not your Realtor, not your title company, not your lender.
