AlertNassau

AlertNassau is the county’s official emergency notification system, part of Florida’s Statewide Mass Notification System and running on Everbridge. It delivers by voice call, text message, email, smartphone app and social media, and it is address-based — it also carries National Weather Service smart weather alerts for the address you register.

County text updates

Text OneNassau to 888777 for countywide text updates including burn bans and shelter openings. There is a ZIP code option. Note that this Nixle channel does not include the smart weather alerts — AlertNassau is the one that does. The county also uses Wireless Emergency Alerts, the Emergency Alert System and NOAA Weather Radio.

Know your evacuation zone

Nassau County uses All-Hazards Evacuation Zones. Look up your specific address on the county map at onenassau.com/know-your-zone. Do not assume based on a neighbor, a subdivision name or what happened during a previous storm — and do not assume being off the island means you are not in a zone. The county also maintains a flood map lookup through its hazard page.

Evacuation orders are issued storm by storm. Follow the current instructions from Nassau County Emergency Management rather than assuming a previous storm’s order applies.

NOAA Weather Radio

Nassau County’s SAME code is 012089, on 162.550 MHz from the Jacksonville transmitter (KHB-39). Enter the code as six digits. On a barrier island, during a power outage, with the cell network congested, this is not a nostalgic gadget — it is the thing that still works.

Shelters

Nassau County does not publish a fixed list of shelters. Openings are announced per storm through AlertNassau and the OneNassau text channel.

Pet-friendly is the default here, and that is unusual. Per the county: pet dogs, cats, ferrets and rabbits are welcome at all public shelters — crated, with current rabies vaccination, and with the owner providing food and care. Service animals stay with their handlers. Reptiles cannot be accommodated.

Special medical needs sheltering uses the state registry in Nassau County. Register at snr.flhealthresponse.com. Update it annually before June 1, and note the hard deadline: applications close 72 hours before tropical-storm-force winds arrive. The Florida Department of Health in Nassau County can help at 904-875-6100.

Garbage in Nassau County Works Differently — Read This

Inside the City of Fernandina Beach, collection is contracted by the city and billed on your city utility bill. The city collects yard waste itself by grapple truck — five cubic yards maximum, biodegradable bags — through Public Works Operations at 904-310-3310.

The Convenience Recycling Center

46026 Landfill Road, Callahan. 904-530-6700 or toll free 877-362-5035. Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed 12:30–1:00) and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to noon. Closed Sunday and Monday. Free for county residents, maximum two loads per seven days.

Accepted: household trash, recyclables, glass, paper, cardboard, plastics #1 and #2, aluminum, automotive batteries, scrap metal, cooking oil, electronics, latex paint, appliances and white goods, furniture, mattresses, televisions, and four tires per household per year.

Not accepted: yard waste, and residential construction or demolition debris. No rental or foreclosure cleanouts.

Household hazardous waste is event-based in Nassau County rather than an ongoing drop-off. Check the county page for the next collection event date.

Water, Sewer and Septic

Nassau County does not have a single water utility. Depending on the address you may be served by Nassau Amelia Utilities, operated by FGUA — 904-601-2161, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the same number after hours, where an answering service pages the on-call technician. Inside the city, it is City of Fernandina Beach Utilities at 904-310-3400.

Large parts of unincorporated Nassau County are on private well and septic and are not served by any utility at all. Well and septic permitting goes through the Florida Department of Health in Nassau County — specifically its Environmental Public Health office at 904-557-9150, 86026 Pages Dairy Road W. in Yulee. That is a different number from the health department main line. If you are buying rural acreage here, confirm well and septic status before closing — it affects your appraisal, your inspection and your budget.

Roads, Potholes and Drainage

The Road Department handles roads and potholes: 904-530-6175, toll free 877-588-6860, 37356 Pea Farm Road, Hilliard, Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Public Works covers roads, facilities, parks, fleet and solid waste — note that stormwater and drainage is its OWN department, at 904-530-6390, 96161 Nassau Place in Yulee: 904-530-6120, toll free 855-534-8529, 45195 Musslewhite Road, Callahan.

You can also file a maintenance request online through the county’s citizen portal for potholes, drainage, ditches and bridges.

Animals, Pets and Wildlife

Two of the most-used Nassau County emergency numbers involve animals, and domestic animals and wildlife go to different agencies. Nassau County Animal Services: 904-530-6150. Hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 11 a.m.–4 p.m., Wednesday 1–6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m.–4 p.m. — closed Monday. They handle animal bites, cruelty, dangerous animals and lost pets. After hours, call the Sheriff’s non-emergency line at 904-225-5174.

Inside the City of Fernandina Beach, animal control is the Nassau Humane Society at 904-321-1647, not county Animal Services.

Wildlife is FWC. Nuisance alligators: 866-392-4286. Injured sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, panthers or bears, or wildlife violations: 888-404-3922, 24 hours. On a barrier island with nesting beaches, the sea turtle line matters — and it is a violation of Florida law to keep injured wildlife longer than it takes to transport it.

Beaches and Ocean Safety

Any ocean emergency — a swimmer in trouble, a rip current, a missing person — is a 911 call.

County beachfront parks include Burney Park, Peters Point, Scott Road, the Southend Walkover and the Summer Beach Walkover. Hours run 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. May 1 through October 31, and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. November 1 through April 30. Just bought a home in Nassau County? Don’t forget Homestead Exemption

If the home is your permanent primary residence, Florida law may allow a homestead exemption that reduces taxable value and caps how fast your assessed value can rise. In Nassau County the exemption can reach up to $50,000 — the first $25,000 against all taxes, and a second $25,000 against assessed value over $50,000, excluding school taxes.

1. The deadline is March 1, and you must own and occupy the home before January 1 of the filing year.
2. Nobody files it for you. Not your Realtor, not your title company, not your lender.
