How to Use This St. Johns County Resource Guide

St. Johns County covers St. Augustine, St. Augustine Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, Nocatee, Julington Creek, Fruit Cove, World Golf Village, Elkton, Hastings and a long stretch of Atlantic coastline. Services are not identical everywhere in it. Your water may come from the county, from JEA, or from the City of St. Augustine. Your power is probably Florida Power & Light, but not always. Your evacuation zone depends on your street, not your subdivision name.

So this guide does two things. It gives you the St. Johns County emergency numbers that apply countywide, and it tells you how to find the answers that depend on your specific address.

Alert St. Johns is the county’s official emergency notification system. St. Johns County Emergency Management uses it to reach residents with critical, time-sensitive information — hurricanes, wildfires, evacuation orders, water advisories, missing persons and civil emergencies. You choose how you want to be reached: cell phone by voice or text, email, home phone, business phone.

The county is direct about the limits of this one, and so are we: these are not emergency weather alerts. They are general EOC updates. Use them as a supplement to Alert St. Johns, NOAA Weather Radio and the Wireless Emergency Alerts your phone already receives — never as your only warning channel.

Know Your Zone: St. Johns County Hurricane Evacuation Zones

St. Johns County uses six hurricane evacuation zones, labeled A through F. Zone A covers most low-lying areas along the coast and the river. Zone F covers an area along the St. Johns River that is vulnerable to flooding.

Look up your address on the county’s official evacuation zone locator. Florida also maintains a statewide Know Your Zone page.

Two things matter more than the letter itself. First, evacuation orders are issued storm by storm — the fact that your zone was not called last time tells you nothing about the next one. Follow the current instructions from St. Johns County Emergency Management. Second, the county’s guidance for mobile homes and RVs is unconditional: “Plan to evacuate if you live in a mobile home, RV, camper, boat or similar conveyance.” That applies regardless of your zone.

NOAA Weather Radio

When the power is out, the cell network is congested and it is three in the morning, a NOAA Weather Radio still works. It is one of the few pieces of hurricane equipment that earns its shelf space.

The SAME code and transmitter frequencies come from the National Weather Service Jacksonville. The International Golf Parkway dividing line is St. Johns County Emergency Management’s own guidance. Enter the code as six digits — most radios expect 012109, not 12109.

Hurricane Evacuation and Shelters

Evacuation routes for the City of St. Augustine, Anastasia Island, Crescent Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach and the St. Johns River areas are published on the county’s evacuation information page, with downloadable maps. Which shelters open, and when

St. Johns County maintains a list of designated shelters. Which of them actually open is decided storm by storm. Do not drive to a building because it sheltered people during a previous hurricane.

Current openings are announced through the county website, county and EOC social media, local radio and television, and by calling Emergency Management at 904-824-5550. The full list of designated locations is on the county’s hurricane evacuation shelters page.

Pet-friendly and special medical needs shelters

The county designates pet-friendly shelters (birds, cats, dogs, pocket pets and rabbits) and special medical needs shelters. Special medical needs sheltering requires pre-registration.

St. Johns County runs its own registry — do not use the statewide one. Register online at webapp.sjcfl.us/evacassist, by mail using the county’s printable form, or by calling 904-824-5550. Register before hurricane season, not during a storm.

What to bring to a shelter

Per the county: a three-day water supply (one gallon per person per day), three days of non-perishable food, all medications, hygiene items, clothing, bedding, a flashlight, photo identification, and your electronics with chargers. Shelters are a place of last refuge, not a hotel — plan on being uncomfortable and bring what you need to stay well.

What Should I Do If Someone Is Bitten by a Snake in St. Johns County?

Florida has venomous snakes, and Northeast Florida yards, retention ponds and wooded lots are their habitat. Two numbers belong on this page: 911 for a medical emergency, and Florida Poison Control at 800-222-1222, staffed 24 hours a day in more than 100 languages.

What official sources say to do (Florida Poison Information Center Network and the CDC):

• Get emergency medical care right away so antivenom can be started if needed. Do not wait for symptoms.
• Call Poison Control at 800-222-1222 for guidance; call 911 for a medical emergency.
• Keep the person calm. Have them sit or lie down with the bite in a neutral, comfortable position, kept below heart level.
• Remove rings, watches and tight clothing near the bite before swelling starts.
• Wash the bite with soap and water and cover it with a clean, dry dressing.
• If it can be done safely and from a distance, photograph the snake. Do not try to catch it.

Two notes worth knowing before you need them. The Florida SAIL line is only staffed during an activated emergency — outside a declared event you will reach a recorded message, so it is not a substitute for calling the county at 904-209-0655. And the Florida Insurance Consumer Helpline, run by the Department of Financial Services Division of Consumer Services, answers Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern. If a hurricane claim is being delayed, underpaid or denied, that helpline exists for exactly that situation.

FL511 is the Florida Department of Transportation’s official traveler information system. It covers crashes, congestion, construction, road closures, detours and evacuation travel conditions across the state.

Garbage, Recycling, Yard Waste and Storm Debris

Trash and debris questions generate more calls than any other item in this list of St. Johns County emergency numbers and services. Here is where they go.

Collection basics

• Weekly curbside collection of garbage, recycling and yard waste for more than 120,000 residential units countywide.
• Everything must be separated by the resident and at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your collection day.
• Place containers within three to five feet of the edge of the traveled roadway.
• No can or bag may exceed 50 pounds.
• No collection on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Transfer stations are closed those days too.

Recycling

The county recycles what it calls The Take Five: paper and cardboard (flattened, in sections no larger than three feet by three feet), clean and empty plastic containers, cartons (milk, juice, soup, broth, wine), glass bottles and jars only, and metal food and beverage cans. Put them loose in the cart, not bagged.

Not accepted: plastic bags and film, electronics, bubble wrap, toys, hangers, packing peanuts, Styrofoam, food waste, diapers, yard waste and tires.

Yard waste

Branches, shrubs and stumps go out stacked neatly, none longer than six feet or heavier than 50 pounds. Leaves, grass clippings and small debris must be bagged, bundled or placed in a container no larger than 32 gallons and 50 pounds. Whole trees, land-clearing debris, fencing, landscape timbers, garden hoses, planters and yard decorations are not collected.

Bulk items and appliances

Couches, sectionals, mattresses and household furniture go curbside next to your regular garbage. Appliances and white goods can be taken to either transfer station or scheduled for curbside appliance recycling by calling Solid Waste.

Both stations accept household hazardous waste — motor oil, oil filters, gasoline, wax, cleaners, soap, pool chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, batteries, aerosol cans, antifreeze, propane cylinders and fire extinguishers. County residents need proof of residence (a driver license showing a current St. Johns County address). Pressure-treated wood, tires, residential construction debris and paint are accepted across the scale for a charge.

Hurricane and storm debris

After a storm, the rules change and they matter:

1. Place debris in piles along the curb, not in the roadway.
2. Keep piles at least three feet from utility boxes, mailboxes, poles, fire hydrants and other obstacles.
3. Separate into distinct piles: vegetation; construction debris; appliances and damaged household items.
4. Household garbage and recycling continue on the normal schedule — keep those separate from storm debris.
5. Watch local media for the announced collection date and have material curbside by then. Crews work street to street, clearing emergency access roads first.

Power Outages in St. Johns County

Most of St. Johns County is served by Florida Power & Light. FPL’s filed tariff lists St. Augustine, St. Augustine Beach, St. Augustine Shores, Crescent Beach, South Ponte Vedra Beach, Butler Beach, Vilano Beach, Durbin, Hastings, Elkton-area communities and unincorporated St. Johns among the communities it serves. Roads, Potholes, Drainage and County Service Requests

For potholes, culverts, ditch cleaning, road grading, roadside mowing, tree trimming and stormwater maintenance on county-maintained roads, St. Johns County Public Works / Road & Bridge takes work requests at 904-209-0266, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Right-of-way questions: 904-209-0126. Road & Bridge does not handle private property, ditches outside county easements, state roads, or water and sewer lines.

SJC Connect

SJC Connect is the county’s free non-emergency service request app, for both phones and web browsers. You pick a category (roadways, drainage, parks, utilities and more), drop a pin on a map or search an address, describe the issue, attach a photo, and submit. Each request gets a tracking number with status updates. Submit while logged in rather than anonymously if you want confirmation and email updates.

Animals, Pets and Wildlife

Two of the most-used St. Johns County emergency numbers involve animals, and they go to different agencies. Domestic animals and wildlife are handled separately in Florida. Getting that right saves a phone call at a bad moment.

Domestic animals — St. Johns County Animal Control

FWC’s guidance on baby animals is worth repeating: leave them alone. The parents are usually nearby. Keeping injured wildlife longer than it takes to transport it is a violation of Florida law without a permit.

Just Bought a Home in St. Johns County? Don’t Forget Homestead Exemption

This is the single most commonly missed step for new Florida homeowners, and it is the one with real money attached.

If the home you bought is your permanent primary residence, Florida law may allow you to claim a homestead exemption that reduces the taxable value of the property, and it also caps how fast your assessed value can rise in future years. If you previously had a Florida homestead, portability may let you carry accumulated savings from that home to this one — and there are deadlines on that.

Two things you need to know:

1. The statutory filing deadline is March 1. If March 1 falls on a weekend, it moves to the next business day. Late applications may be accepted for just cause during the TRIM period, but do not plan around that.
2. Nobody files it for you. Not your Realtor, not your title company, not your lender. It is on you.

The Property Appraiser also administers exemptions for seniors with limited income, widows and widowers, blind and totally disabled residents, quadriplegic residents, first responders totally and permanently disabled in the line of duty, and several veteran exemptions tied to service-connected disability ratings.
